Kids in Parks Program

Families sitting at an outdoor picnic table with a Mexican blanket tablecloth eating lunch on a sunny day with the forest in the background.

If you live in Madras or Prineville, there is a fun resource to get kids excited about hiking.  The Kids in Parks program was developed in 2019, which designated 5 local trails as TRACK Trails.  These kid-friendly hikes now have kiosks with activity brochures, including Tracks and Traces, Nature’s Hide and Seek, Animal Athletes, and more.  After your hike, you can log your activity online at kidsinparks.com, and kids will receive up to 6 prizes in the mail.

Madras TRACK Trails:

M-Hill Trail:  1 mile trail from the Youth Fishing Pond to the top of the M-Hill, with stunning views of the Cascade Mountains.

Willow Creek Canyon Trail:  Hike along Willow Creek among juniper trees and canyon walls.

Prineville TRACK Trails:

Barnes Butte Trails:  Easy 1.1 mile loop around the Happy Hour Plateau racetrack with great views.

Rimrock Park:  0.5 mile network of trails that weave through habitat on the banks of the Crooked River, including the Youth Fishing Pond.

Crooked River Wetlands Complex:  1.5 mile loop through stunning wetland habitat.  Hikers may see a wide variety of wildlife and birds.
